Natural Ways You Can Improve Your Eye Health

Your eyes are your windows to the world. Keeping them healthy ensures you have a bright and beautiful view. While regular visits to the eye doctor are important, there are a number of things you can do on your own to maintain good eye health.

Healthy Diet

Make sure you're following a healthy diet. Following a balanced diet has an effect on every part of your health. For optimal eye health, make certain you are getting plenty vitamin E, vitamin C, lutein, zinc and omega-3s. Leafy greens, fatty fish, beans, eggs and citrus fruits are just some of the food options that fall into this category. All of these options promote better eye health and vision.

Contact Lens

All contact lenses come with an expiration date. This date isn't merely a suggested date to stop using the lens, but rather an important date to follow. Contact lens are packed inside a saline solution to keep them sterile. However, with age, this saline solution can become contaminated. At this stage it has the potential to harm your eyes and cause an infection. You might think you're saving money by wearing your contact lens behind their expiration date, but this can actually cost you more than just money.

Television and Computers

Try not to stare at a television or computer screen for too long. Looking at either of these objects for a prolonged amount of time can lead to eye strain, or eye fatigue. While not a serious condition, this can cause your eyes to become dry, irritated and make it more difficult for you to focus your eyes. If your job requires you to work on a computer all day, make it a point to look away for a couple minutes at least two times an hour.

Sugar Consumption

In addition to following a diet rich in nutrients, there are some foods you also want to limit your consumption of, particularly sugar. While decadent and delightful, excessive amounts of sugar can be dangerous for your eye health. Excessive sugar hinders your body's ability to absorb the vitamins and nutrients you're eating because the vitamins have to work to burn the sugar. If your body can't absorb these vitamins, they will do little good in maintaining your eye health.

While they may seem minor, making small changes in your lifestyle can have a significant impact on your eye health. Make certain you are doing your part to protect your vision and eye health. Check out ophthalmology services such as Jo Johnson for more information.
